The Secret...what's it all about?

Updated: Mar 12, 2018

By now, you’ve all heard about “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. Whether you’ve seen the movie, read the book, watched the documentaries or just heard the hype; you’ve recently become aware that there is something called the Law of Attraction which apparently influences every person and their individual ability to experience unlimited happiness, love, health, and prosperity in their life. Sounds like a secret worth knowing about, doesn’t it?

While most of us have now heard about the Law of Attraction and some of us have even started to investigate its power, many of us still don’t really understand what it actually means and how we use it to create a life we love. But just because we don’t understand the law, doesn’t mean we should reject it. I personally don’t understand how my television or computer works, yet I enjoy the benefits of both. All I’m asking is that you consider this as a second opinion and keep an open mind. Whether you choose to absorb the message and embrace the law is completely up to you.

The Universal Law of Attraction is the most powerful law in the universe. The concept is simple but putting it into daily routine as automatic behaviour takes commitment and practice. But once you really “get it”, it becomes part of who you are and will transform your life. You can deliberately use this law to create your future.

The Universal Law of Attraction states: “You get what you think about, whether wanted or unwanted” or more simply: “like attracts like”. In other words, we get what we focus on. We attract whatever we choose to give our attention, energy and focus to - whether positive or negative. This law is universal because it applies to everyone, everywhere. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you were born, where you live, what you do for an occupation, what your religious beliefs are, what colour your skin is, what language you speak, what age or gender you are...the law is true for everyone equally. It is just as true as the Law of Gravity and cannot be changed or broken.

Although you might have only recently become aware about the law of attraction, it has always been present and working its magic, right from the beginning. In 1637, the “Father of Modern Philosophy”, René Descartes wrote: “Cogito, ergo sum” (Latin: “I think, therefore I am”) and the Bible tells us: “as a man thinketh, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). This universal law is working in your life right now, whether you are aware of it or not. Everything you are presently experiencing is a reflection of your past thoughts. Take a moment to examine your current relationships, situations, jobs, health, finances, possessions and opportunities. Since you attract what you most think about, it should be easy to see where your thoughts have been directing each area of your life, because that is exactly what you are now experiencing!

Your mind is like a magnet that pulls metal to itself from any direction or distance. Magnets don’t “try” to attract, they just do attract and our thoughts, being magnetic, work the same way. Whether or not we want to attract or are “trying” to attract, we ARE doing so all the time. As we think, our magnetic thoughts are sent out into the universe and attract all like things that are on the same current or frequency. Attraction is a neutral power and just as a magnet attracts everything that is metal, regardless of whether it is useful or not, our thoughts and feelings will attract the likeness of what we think about. The law of attraction is also impersonal and doesn’t recognize good or bad – it simply gives you whatever it is you are thinking about. And our thoughts actually become things!

Unfortunately, most of us make the mistake of attracting by “default” rather than by deliberate choice. We spend our time thinking about problems, focusing on what we don’t want to happen, and putting our energy into things that don’t feel good. In doing this, we are actually creating more problems, attracting more of what we don’t want to happen and more of the things that don’t feel good. Then we spend time wondering why negativity keeps showing up in our life and we think about it some more, which only serves (you guessed it) to attract more “bad stuff”.

Another characteristic of magnets is that while one side attracts, the other repels. Any negative, pessimistic and limiting thoughts such as rejection, failure, disappointment, regret, fear, suspicion, distrust, incompetence, self-doubt or inferiority will push good things away from your life and bring you more of what you’re worrying about. If you are constantly focusing on a lack of something, you will attract more lack (scarcity). If you spend your time complaining, or even sympathising with someone who complains, you will attract more issues to complain about. If you believe that life is hard, lonely or a struggle, that’s exactly what you’ll experience your life to be.

Once you are aware of this law and how it works, you can start to use it to deliberately attract what you want into your life. Considering what we’ve learnt about the Law of Attraction, isn’t it prudent to channel your thoughts to be positive, optimistic and empowering to attract beneficial things into your life? What you are focusing on now is creating your future life. So focus on living in abundance and put your energy into something you love and feel passionate about in order to attract abundance and more of what you love into your life. It really is that simple.

No matter where you are now or what has happened in your life so far, you can change your future profoundly by beginning to change your thoughts today. It’s not magic (although it can feel like it is) and drastic change probably won’t happen immediately. Only you can make this work to bring about change. The more changes you initiate into your daily lifestyle, the more you will attract a variety of things into your life. The more positive your focus, the more positive those things will be. Only you can drive this change in your life. When would now be a good time to start living the life you’ve been dreaming about? Jump into the driver’s seat, focus on what you want, push down on the accelerator and don’t look back!
